Handcrafted for the Maine Coast: The Read Boat Shoe
There’s a certain rhythm to summer in Maine. Fog lifting off the harbor in the morning. Lobster traps stacked along the docks. Salt air moving through open windows. Lunch at Luke’s Lobster after a morning on the water. Evenings that stretch long past sunset.
The Read Boat Shoe was designed with those moments in mind.
Handcrafted in our Lewiston, Maine factory for three generations, the Read is our take on a timeless coastal classic — rooted in traditional boat shoe design while built for modern summer wear. Equal parts relaxed and refined, it’s the kind of shoe that feels natural everywhere from the docks of Portland to weekends spent along the coast.

The Design of the Read Boat Shoe
The boat shoe has long been defined by simplicity, comfort, and versatility. Originally designed for life near the water, it became iconic because it moved so easily between utility and everyday style.
The Read continues that tradition through details that prioritize craftsmanship, authenticity and wearability:
-
True handsewn moccasin construction
-
Non-slip and non-marking siped deck soles
-
Full leather lacing system
-
Soft leather uppers designed to break in beautifully over time
-
Lightweight feel ideal for warm weather wear
Every pair is handcrafted by skilled craftspeople in Lewiston using techniques that have defined Rancourt & Co. since 1967. The result is a shoe built not only for one season, but for years of summers ahead and part of what defines our Spring 2026 Collection.

Inspired by the Maine Coast
The Read feels most at home where Maine summer traditions live.
The bold red colorway draws inspiration from weathered buoys, harbor markers, lobster boats, and the working waterfronts that define coastal towns throughout the state. The navy version leans into a more classic New England feel, timeless, understated, and easy to wear with almost anything.
For the launch imagery, we styled the Read against the textures and places that inspired it: stacked lobster traps, marinas after rainfall, dockside lobster rolls, and quiet moments along the waterfront.
Because in Maine, coastal style has never been overly polished. It’s relaxed. Functional. Slightly weathered in the best way.

What to Wear with the Read Boat Shoe
One of the reasons the boat shoe has remained iconic is because of how effortlessly it styles into summer wardrobes.
The Read pairs naturally with:
-
Linen or striped button-down shirts
-
Rolled chinos or relaxed cotton trousers
-
Tailored shorts
-
Lightweight knitwear draped over the shoulders on cooler coastal mornings
-
Bare ankles and sun-faded layers after long days outside
The Red Read makes a statement against crisp whites, washed denim, or neutral summer tones, while the navy version becomes an everyday staple.
Whether dressed up for dinner in town or worn casually on the docks, the Read is designed to move easily through every part of a Maine summer.

A Perfect Day in Coastal Maine
The Read Boat Shoe was made for the kind of summer days that don’t need much planning.
Coffee near the harbor. Walking through Portland before the crowds arrive. A ferry ride across Casco Bay. Lunch at Luke’s Lobster with chips and a cold drink overlooking the marina. Exploring working waterfronts and coastal towns before heading back toward the water for sunset.
These are the Well Worn paths that continue to inspire how we design and make our shoes.
